Reconfigurable Advanced Visualization Environment
RAVE

As of February 2005 the RAVE has been replaced by a FLEX.
Fakespace Systems Inc.

Equipped with air casters, the three RAVE modules can be raised and rolled into different viewing configurations: flat wall, angled theater, and immersive walk-in environment. The additional projector and retractable mirror system generate an image on the flooring surface.

Motion Tracking System and Input Devices

Flock of Birds Real-time Motion Tracking

The Extended Range Transmitter (ERT) is placed on top front of the RAVE. The ERT is linked to the Extended Range Controller (ERC). Each Device Controller is connected to a sensor which is attached to an input device such as a wand or a pair of gloves and/or to stereoscopic glasses.

Workwand, Pinch Gloves, and Stereoscopic Glasses

The wand is a tracked input device with a 2-Degree Of Liberty (DOF) joystick capability and three programmable buttons that allow users to navigate in the virtual environment and manipulate virtual objects.

Pinch Gloves are the world's most widely used virtual manipulation device, allowing users to pinch and 'grab' virtual objects or initiate actions with natural gestures. They can mimic the wand actions.

CrystalEyes3 stereoscopic glasses are designed to be worn with or without prescription eyewear. Each pair of glasses includes two batteries. The infrared sensor (located in the center of the eyewear) receives infrared signals from emitters located in each RAVE module behind the screen display. Each lens is shuttered by those signals to let our brain form a single stereoscopic image of each object.

The infrared emitters synchronyze the eyewears in conjunction with the left and right image sequences on the screens.

9" CRT Projector

Each RAVE module is equipped with a Cathode Ray Tube (CRT) projector to generate the display on each vertical screen. A fourth projector generates the display on the flooring surface.

Air Compressor

An Air Compressor is used to raise the RAVE modules when switching the configuration to a flat wall, an angled theater, or an immersive cave like walk-in environment.
